Women with disabilities highly prone to intimate partner violencec

Thursday, October 30th, 2008

A new study has revealed that women with a disability are more prone to intimate partner related physical assaults and rapes than those without a disability.Presented at the American Public Health Association’s 136th Annual Meeting and Exposition in San Diego, the study used data collected from seven states and one territory as part of the 2006 Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System survey.

The researchers associated with the project examined disability prevalence and differences in intimate partner violence (IPV) among women with and without a disability.

They found that disabled women’s likelihood of experiencing some form of IPV in their lifetime was 37.3 percent, compared with the 20.6 percent likelihood of those without any disability.

The study also revealed that there were 28.5 percent chances that women with a disability would be threatened with violence, compared with 15.4 percent likelihood for their normal counterparts.

The chances of being hit, slapped, pushed, kicked or physically hurt by an intimate partner were also 30.6 percent for women with a disability, compared with 15.7 percent for those without a disability.

Women with a disability were more likely to report ever experiencing unwanted sex by an intimate partner than those without a disability.

“This epidemiologic evidence identifies an opportunity for federal, state and local stakeholders to form new partnerships to better align disability and violence prevention programs and policies,” said Dr. Brian Armour, lead researcher on the study.

“Furthermore, it identifies the need for comprehensive violence prevention programs that will enhance public awareness to reduce violence against women with a disability,” the researcher added.

Check paper is one thing that is commonly put at stake for those people who just cannot think of any good but to fool other people to steal money. Also, if you have to deal with the check stock, you have to be sure that you will put something in there so you will not have a hard time identifying if it is real or not. If you will only settle for a non-techie way of dealing with the problem, you will never get along with the technology that most of the syndicates are using. So, if I were you, it will be better if you will also make use of the MICR toner, which can save you from all those fraud acts that will be very possible these days. You will really make sure that you will also go a long way for that so if you will only think about the comfort that you can get once you will have this, you will really be saved with a great amount and a great effort from all those you need to deal upon. So, go for the MICR toner now before it will be too late.

New Moon rover mixes old and new technology

Saturday, October 25th, 2008

A new battery-powered truck, which will herald the next generation of sport-utility vehicles, might be driven by the next astronauts to land on the moon.

According to a report in National Geographic News, the new truck, which is being field tested in Arizona, US, has a six-wheel drive, active suspension, and computerized navigation, a mixture of old and new technology.

But, when the final model rolls out in 2019, only an exclusive group of highly trained professionals will get to drive it—the next astronauts to land on the moon.

The new lunar rover, informally known as the Chariot, is a prototype being developed as part of NASA’s Constellation program, which aims to put people back on the moon by 2020.

The current version combines 35 years of technological advances with lessons learned from the original “moon buggies” used during the Apollo missions of the 1970s.

One of the biggest modifications is an optional pressurized cabin that comes fully equipped with beds, a pantry, a waste-management system, and a pair of space suits, allowing astronauts to live and work “on the road” for up to two weeks.

“It’s important to keep the crew happy,” noted Mike Gernhardt, a veteran NASA astronaut who is helping design the Chariot at the Johnson Space Center in Houston, Texas. “As long as the food’s good and the seats are comfortable, you can put up with a lot,” he added.

Ambrose and other engineers have been designing the new rover in part based on tips from Apollo astronauts.

To overcome the porpoising problem, for instance, the Chariot has a longer wheelbase and is outfitted with the same automatic stability control used to keep today’s sport-utility vehicles from rolling over.

Steering is controlled by a computerized navigation system, and all six wheels can turn in any direction or be individually lifted for greater maneuverability.

The craft also has two gears. The first gear tops out at 3 miles (5 kilometers) an hour, while second gear can safely reach 12 miles (20 kilometers) an hour.

Rechargeable lithium-ion batteries allow the craft to venture up to 62 miles (100 kilometers) and back before needing a pit stop at a solar-power station.

One of the more unusual innovations is a pair of slip-on space suits attached to the back of the pressurized cabin.

The rover will need to pass several rounds of technical tests and budget reviews between now and 2019 before the design is finalized.

Office Training Basics

Friday, October 24th, 2008

No one really likes to talk about the necessary training for most people working in an office environment. The sad truth is that there are a lot of simple office rules that require training if you want to make them stick. Some are just minor annoyances, but there are some subjects that really require good training.

Sexual harassment training is one area you want to commit some resources too. It is a sad fact, but men and women can both act quite immature at times. This can lead to a lot of unwanted flirtation and sexual advances. Any responsible company will do everything that they can to limit this. A sexual harassment suit can be devastating to a company on the financial front, but it is even worse for worker morale and self-esteem.

Another area that may require some resources is customer service training. Some groups don’t have to deal with the customers. They are the lucky bunch who are fairly immune to this need. Everyone else will probably be in contact with your important clients, and it is necessary that they behave in the proper manner so that no one is offended. Your customer service training doesn’t have to be extensive, even a simple course should drive the basic etiquette lessons home.

These simple courses can do wonders to advance your business and make it a safe and effective workplace. Check into your training options today.

Space tourist Garriott, cosmonauts return to Earth

Friday, October 24th, 2008

A Russian Soyuz space capsule Friday returned to the Earth safely, carrying its crew of Russian cosmonauts and a US space tourist. The capsule with Richard Garriott, a computer games designer and son of NASA astronaut Owen Garriott, who paid $30 million to follow in his father’s footsteps, landed safely around 0330 GMT in the Kazakh steppe.

‘Start and landing went according to plan. Now helicopters and search units are flying to the landing site,’ Valeri Lyndin a spokesman of the flight control near Moscow, was quoted as saying by the Interfax news agency.

Soyuz also carried cosmonauts Olek Kononenko and Sergei Volkov, himself the son of a cosmonaut. Both of them spent six months on board the international ISS space station, part of the station’s 17th long-term crew.

Owen Garriott and Alexander Volkov both travelled to Kazakstan to welcome their sons.

Samsung Blu-ray Players Will Stream Netflix Videos

Friday, October 24th, 2008

DVD-rental company Netflix has been working aggressively to expand its delivery options beyond the U.S. Postal Service. In its latest move, the company has struck a deal with Samsung Electronics to embed software in Blu-ray players that will allow consumers to stream video selections from Netflix’s library of more than 12,000 titles. No financial terms were disclosed. “Samsung has been at the forefront of innovation in consumer electronics and has established a market leadership position in Blu-ray and digital television,” said Netflix cofounder and CEO Reed Hastings. “We’re excited about the upgraded Blu-ray Disc players. Moreover, we look forward to working with Samsung in the years to come to deliver a variety of outstanding products on which consumers can watch movies delivered over the Internet from Netflix.”

The software to access the Netflix library will be preinstalled on Samsung models BD-P2550 and BD-P2500, which are currently available for $399 each. Consumers who have already purchased the machines can download new software from Samsung to gain access to the Netflix library.

Hybrid Devices

Consumers who purchase the Netflix-ready Samsung players will probably not be able to stream movies at the same resolution as a Blu-ray disk. Most streamed high-definition movies meet the minimum resolution of 780p, while Blu-ray movies are 1080p. However, Michael Gartenberg, vice president of mobile strategy at Jupitermedia, said that won’t be a sticking point for most consumers.

“It’s not the question of quality,” Gartenberg said, “it’s the question of ‘good enough,’ and that’s a standard they should have no problem meeting.”

The real point of the deal, Gartenberg suggested, is that the consumer media market is in transition from the DVD format to online downloads, and manufacturers are experimenting with hybrid products.

“We’re not there yet, but it’s clear that’s where this market is headed in the future,” he said. “Products like this are somewhat short-term and tactical as vendors test solutions that can work in the interim.”

Taking on Apple TV?

The most obvious target of the new collaboration between Samsung and Netflix is the leader in streaming video, Apple TV. Consumers who buy a Netflix-equipped Samsung player will be able to access their Netflix queue online, select movies and television shows, and see those choices on their television screen. It will take approximately 30 seconds for any selected movie or episode to start playing.

Gartenberg argued that, at least in the short term, this deal offers greater benefits to Samsung than Netflix.

“The problem is that one still needs a Netflix subscription to make the online part work,” Gartenberg said, “and there remains a lack of content relative to what Netflix offers in disk format; the streaming library is little over a tenth of Netflix’s total catalog. For the most part, this is a differentiation that can help Samsung separate itself from the market and drive adoption of those consumers looking to buy.”

Depression during pregnancy doubles risk of premature delivery

Friday, October 24th, 2008

Depressed pregnant women face twice the risk of premature delivery than their counterparts with no such symptoms, according to a new study.Besides the increased risk of premature delivery, the study found that the risk grows with the severity of the depressive symptoms, among pregnant women.

These findings also provide preliminary evidence that social and reproductive risk factors, obesity, and stressful events may aggravate depression-premature delivery link, according to researchers.

‘Premature delivery is the leading cause of infant mortality, and yet we don’t know what causes it,’ said co-author De-Kun Li, a reproductive and perinatal epidemiologist at Kaiser Permanente’s Division of Research in Oakland.

‘This study adds to emerging evidence that depression during early pregnancy may interfere with the neuroendocrine pathways and subsequently placental function,’ Li said.

‘The placenta and neuroendocrine functions play an important role in maintaining the health of a pregnancy and determining the onset of labour,’ Li explained.

Because the majority of the women in the study did not use anti-depressants, the study provides a clear look at the link between depression and preterm delivery.

The study, among the first to examine depression and premature delivery in a representative and diverse population in the US, looked at 791 pregnant Kaiser Permanente members in San Francisco city and county from October 1996 through October 1998.

Researchers interviewed the women around their 10th week of pregnancy and found that 41 percent of the women reported significant or severe depressive symptoms, according to a Kaiser Permanente press release.

The women with less severe depressive symptoms had a 60 percent higher risk of premature delivery — defined as delivery at less than 37 completed weeks of gestation — compared with women without significant depressive symptoms, and the women with severe depressive symptoms had more than twice the risk.

In addition to being the leading cause of infant mortality and morbidity, preterm delivery is also the leading medical expenditure for infants, with estimated annual cost of about $26 billion in the US alone.

The study is published online in the Oxford University Press’ journal Human Reproduction.

Erectile dysfunction warns of early heart attack

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

Erectile dysfunction is linked with heart attacks but it is being ignored by general practitioners, a doctor with Good Hope Hospital in Birmingham has warned.

Dr Geoffrey Hackett reported regularly seeing patients referred with erectile dysfunction or ED after a heart attack, only to hear that they had developed erectile dysfunction two to three years before - a warning sign ignored by their general practitioners.

It is well known that ED (inability to achieve erection) doubles the risk of heart disease, a risk equivalent to being a moderate smoker or having an immediate family history of heart disease.

ED in type 2 diabetes has been shown to be a better predictor of the risk of heart disease than high blood pressure or high cholesterol, according to an Eurekalert release.

But despite this considerable evidence ED is still treated as a recreational or “lifestyle issue” rather than a predictor of a serious health problem, said Hackett.

The UK government has pledged to reduce the death rate from coronary heart disease and stroke and related diseases in people under 75 by at least 40 percent by 2010, yet there is no screening for erectile dysfunction in patients with diabetes or heart disease, he said.
